Electromagnetic retarders

Faster speeds. Heavier vehicles. Intense demands in a fast-paced, stop and go world. Let's face it, traditional friction brakes - whether drum or disc, air or hydraulic - are finding it increasingly difficult to meet the real demands of today's heavy vehicles. While other transportation and safety capabilities have steadily progressed over time, this metal-on-metal technology has remained relatively unchanged. Well, at Telma, we think it's time for a major revolution. And though many are describing our innovation as "the future," we call it simply "frictionless braking." As the world's leading manufacturer of electromagnetic frictionless braking systems, Telma is literally revolutionizing vehicle control. The transportation market needs breakthrough solutions to friction braking problems, and we're providing them. From the principles of human safety, to the efficiency and cost savings of cutting-edge technology, the reasons for advancing to the science of frictionless brakes have never been more compelling.

Operation

Rotating parts called rotors are attached to the driveshaft. Separated by a narrow air gap, the stator is connected to the vehicle chassis. When electricity flows through the stator coils, electromagnetic fields with alternate polarities are created. As the rotors pass through these fields, eddy currents are generated which slow the rotors and thus slow the driveshaft. Any heat generated during braking is self-dissipated through the rotor vanes.

AXIAL Series FOCAL Series Control Options
The Axial series of retarders gives maximum installation flexibility on all types of chassis, whether as an on-line factory option or as a retrofit on vehicles already in opreration. Installed in the drive-line between the gearbox and the driven axle, the Axial is the universal answer, regardless of the size of the vehicle. Legendary for its robustness and reliability, the Axial series provides safety, economy and comfort in all applications. Especially designed for rear-engine coaches and short wheelbase tractor units, the Telma focal series of retarders in mounted directly to the gearbox or axle. The direct mounting system results in a practically unchanged drive-line lenght; it also substantially reduces the installed weight and simplifies the maintenance of the system. With the widest range of control options, from a simple hand lever to the sophisticated Electronic Retarder Control, the optimum system can be matched to the particular operational needs of the vehicle and driver. The new Telma AD 50-90 Retarder provides all the well-known benefits in a lower weight, more compact package, simplifying installation within the chassis. This new unit also offers major reductions in the already low maintenant requirements of Telma equipments with a new sealed, greased-for-life bearing system.
